Узел железных и автодорог, 2 аэропорта. Крупный промышленный центр. Вырос в связи с удооством использования угля близлежащего Аппалачского каменноугольного бассейна и наличием импортного сырья. В обрабатывающей промышленности (базируется часто на импортном сырье) занято 208 тыс. чел. (1969). Преобладает тяжёлая индустрия, главная отрасль - чёрная металлургия; на мысе Спарроус-Пойнт - крупный (на 2-м месте в США) металлургический комбинат "Бетлехем стил корпорейшен".
